The application for Windows Process Monitor is free and portable (it does not have to be installed). Launch the application and its interface will be populated with information. And more to the point, the interface will display a list of all running processes and threads. Filtering functionality is offered to help you manage the list of file system, Registry and process/thread activity.

To get started with Process Monitor you do not need to install anything. As mentioned above, the application is portable and does not have to be installed. Process Monitor will work on computers powered by Windows XP SP2 and newer or Windows Server 2003 SP1 and newer.

A list of all running processes and threads is presented on Process Monitor’s interface. At the top of the application’s interface there’s a File Menu and a toolbar with buttons for various features: capture, filter, show process tree, find, and so on. The interface may not be the prettiest thing in the world, but it is easy to navigate and easy to use. From this interface you can easily access all the functionality Process Monitor has to offer.

Here’s a quick list that presents the main bits of functionality Process Monitor has to offer: view a list of file system, Registry and process/thread activity; filter the aforementioned list; handy search function; import and export configuration; view event properties; view system details; search for events online; and more. Since Process Monitor is free software, you have all the time in the world to uncover all the functionality it has to offer.

Process Monitor is a handy tool that allows you to view a list of file system, Registry and process/thread activity.

Pros

Process Monitor does not have to be installed; the application is portable. Process Monitor works with anything from XP SP2 and Server 2003 SP1 onward. The interface is easy to navigate. View all running processes and threads. Process Monitor is free software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
